museo_nazionale_napoliThe National Archaeological Museum of Naples (MANN) is considered one of the largest in the world for the quality and the quantity of works exhibited, mainly those of greek-roman era.
The building that now houses the museum, whose construction began in 1585,also represents a significant architectural landmark: it is one of the largest palaces in Naples.

The museum consists of three/four main groups: the Farnese Collection (consisting of remains from Rome and environs), the collections of Pompeii (relics from Pompeii, Herculaneum, Stabia and other ancient sites of the Vesuvian area, especially the part of Bourbon collections); other findings are part of smaller collections acquired or donated to the museum (eg the collection Borgia, Santangelo, the Stevens, Spinelli, etc..); finally finds from excavations in the area of jurisdiction of the Superintendence for Archaeological Heritage of Naples and Caserta (prehistoric section, Cumana, Pithecusae, Neapolis, etc..) is part of the Museum.
After the major restoration and renovation of the building - which lasted for several decades and are now nearing completion - will continue in the program and implementing a comprehensive reorganization of the new collections according to display criteria. Because of these works, some collections are excluded from the visit, they are now: the Magna Grecia, the Collection Cumana (Greek vases), the epigraph, the statuary Farnese (in part), the statuesque Pompeii.
