The Obelisk of San Gennaro (also called the Spire of San Gennaro) is the oldest spire of Naples is located in Piazza Riario Sforza.
The obelisk was erected in 1636 by principals of the deputation of the Treasury rigraziamento for the narrow escape during the 1631 eruption. The project was entrusted to the construction Cosimo Fanzago which ended nine years later, though, for the arrival of several contrasts, the work could be said to be completed only in 1660.
The structure consists of a square sort of column on which are placed large spirals that end in a richly dececorato Ionic capital. At the top stands the statue of San Gennaro.
